(MENC) and The National Anthem
Project have recognized the Kelvin and Milne Grove Schools of Lockport District
# 91 as official National Anthem Project All Star Schools.
The schools joined the National Anthem Project campaign by demonstrating a
commitment to music education in their community.
Both schools teach the history of our national anthem “The
Star-Spangled Banner” and all students learn to sing the national anthem. Each
year on or around September 14 both schools participate in an all school singing
of the national anthem, commemorating when Francis Scott Key wrote the words to
“The Star-Spangled Banner”. **************************
Lockport
D91 Students do over 1000 GOOD DEEDS Over 1000 “good deeds” have been done by the 350 + second through fifth grade and KG chorus students from the Lockport School District # 91 (Milne-Kelvin Grove Schools). The students were asked to find ways to serve/help others during the month of November. Deeds included: doing chores around the house without being told, raking leaves for senior neighbors, mowing yards, vacuuming house, washing floors, windows, cleaning basement, gutters; doing housework for grandma; giving up a chair to someone in church, cleaning the fridge and cabinets, saving money instead of spending it to help a paralyzed man, cheering up a friend when she lost her favorite toy (I had the same toy, so I gave her mine), helping uncle when he hurt his back, helping teachers, doing laundry, making dinner when Mom was sick, helping a senior cross the street, putting shopping cart away for a senior lady, helping work in the attic, giving to charity, walking to the store to buy groceries (saved gas and helped out), helping my sister learn to ride a bike, giving dogs a bath, babysitting without taking pay, and many more. The reason for this focus was to help in presenting the annual Christmas musical and tie in with the school district’s “Character Counts” program. 460 + students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, Kelvin Grove Chorus with the help of the Lockport School District 91 TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) of teachers and staff presented the musical, “Santa’s Stuck in the 50’s” (by Sally Albrecht and Jay Althouse) Tuesday, December 4, 2007. The musical was about Santa and his helpers taking inventory of new toys in stock in the North Pole attic. They find a lot of toys from the 1950’s that are still popular today: Barbies, silly putty, hula hoops, yo-yos, Play-Doh, etc. Santa decides to clean out the attic. He doesn’t want the children to make Christmas Wish Lists this year, instead, he wants them to make him lists of good things they are doing to help other people. Christmas is not about getting, but about giving to others. One of the greatest gifts of giving is to help others. Santa surprised the children this year with some of the great 1950’s gifts when they sent him their list of good deeds. District 91 students used their lists of good deeds during the program. Lockport School District uses the “Character Counts” Program in grades K-8. Doing good deeds by serving/helping others follows several of the 6 pillars of Character: Trustworthiness – be honest, don’t deceive, cheat or steal; be reliable – do what you’ll say you’ll do; have the courage to do the right thing; build a good reputation; be loyal – stand by your family, friends and country; Respect – Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule; be tolerant of differences; use good manners, not bad language; be considerate of the feelings of others; don’t threaten hit or hurt anyone; deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements Responsibility – do what you are supposed to; persevere: keep on trying!; always do your best; use self-control; be self disciplined; think before you act – consider the consequences; be accountable for your choices; Fairness – play by the rules; take turns and share; be open-minded; listen to others; don’t take advantage of others; don’t blame others carelessly Caring – be kind; be compassionate and show you care; express gratitude; forgive others; help people in need; Citizenship – do your share to make your school and community better; cooperate; get involved in community affairs; stay informed; vote; be a good neighbor; obey laws and rules; respect authority; protect the environment; *******************************************************

"Spooky, Ugly Office Contest"
Mrs.
Randolph (Music/Chorus) & Ms. Henn (Band) in the basement Music Office Martin Whalen Office Solutions selected The Kelvin Grove Music and Band Office as one of the winners of their “Scary Office” Contest. Martin Whalen gave $5000 divided equally among the three winners Kelvin Grove Music/Band, Joliet School District 86, and the Rialto Theatre. Each group was able to select $1666 in office furniture/equipment of their choice. Mrs. Randolph and Ms. Henn decided to decorate their shared office for Halloween. They enlisted the help of Mrs. Randolph’s neighbors, Nick, Kim, Keara, and Kaley Kursell to loan them their Halloween decorations from their yard for the special project. The music theme this year is “We’re Wild About Music”. With that theme in mind, Mrs. Randolph and Ms. Henn enlisted the help of several “wild” students from skeletons to snakes to help perform in their “special” office. They teach EVERYONE music – no matter how scary their office is. Music will tame even the “Wildest” characters. The Music/Band have never had new file cabinets in their
office. The need was greater to purchase instruments, computers, etc. with no
extras for files. Many files came from the Army Surplus store or were donated
from places that were getting rid of their old cabinets. Thanks to Martin Whalen
Office Solutions, the music office will now have 5 new file cabinets to replace
5 of their 15 cabinets! THANK YOU MARTIN WHALEN OFFICE SOLUTIONS! (It was a
lot of fun!) See the music web site for all of the pictures and more details at www.d91.net
