“Classical is Cool” IS Returning! Check here daily. As soon as I get the FINAL details - I will post here!

It has taken years to renew copyright permissions, etc.

Thanks for all of your requests! It helped!

I have used the two “Classical Is Cool” CDs and accompanying 52 page worksheets from MENC and NARM in my classroom since they were given to all of my students FREE years ago. My students and their parents were listening to classical music together and enjoying it so much.  As many of you have requested, I have tried to get them to bring CIC back so you can give them to your students. MENC told me they want to know the names of the people that are interested in this to see if the numbers are large enough to consider bringing it back. I emailed your request to bring back “Classical Is Cool” and EXPAND that program to “Classical Is Cool #2”. They listened and will be bringing it back.

World’s Largest Concert Information

Voices from Around the Globe Will Sing Along with the World’s Largest Concert® on March 12, 2009

RESTON, VA (October 6, 2008) – MENC: The National Association for Music Education will once again produce the World’s Largest Concert® (WLC®) in March 2009. The World’s Largest Concert has been the highlight of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®) since 1985. A sing-along concert linking students around the world through music, the World’s Largest Concert reached an estimated 6 million students, teachers, and music supporters in recent years.

This year, GATEWAY4M, producer of the animated TV series Wunderkind Little Amadeus®The Adventures of Young Mozart (distributed by American Public Television and premiering this fall) lends financial support to the World’s Largest Concert. “The overall mission of Wunderkind Little Amadeus is to inspire a strong appreciation of classical music among children and to encourage them to make music an active part of their lives — whether through playing an instrument or singing,” said Peter Will, CEO of GATEWAY4M. “Our mission dovetails perfectly with that of MENC and its efforts to realize the World’s Largest Concert, an extraordinary event which demonstrates in a unique way the power of singing.”

Once again, the Hal Leonard Corporation of Milwaukee, WI, provides the vocal and piano accompaniment sheet music for use with the concert. “Music has an extraordinary power to make us feel joy, courage, energy, and even sadness, but what’s even better is that music has the power to bring people together,” said Emily Crocker, vice president of choral publications for Hal Leonard. “Hal Leonard supports teachers, students, and music education, and we are honored to be part of MENC’s World’s Largest Concert.”

A DVD of the program, featuring video recordings of school ensembles from around the nation, is available for purchase from MENC. Teachers are encouraged to play the DVD at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, March 12, 2009, and to invite the rest of their school and members of their communities to attend and sing along. However, the World’s Largest Concert can also be shown at other times during March. The 2009 WLC will not be televised on PBS. Local public access channels may carry the show (check local listings).

The 2009 concert program is “An American Song,” “Ev’rybody Say Peace,” “Follow the Drinking Gourd,” “J’entends Le Moulin/I Hear the Windmill,” “I’ll Make the Difference,” “It’s Our World,” “The Star Spangled Banner,” “There’s Magic in the Music,” and “Ulili E/The Sandpiper.” A free 2009 World’s Largest Concert Teacher’s Guide, including the vocal and piano music, lesson plans, rehearsal tracks, and more, is available online at www.menc.org/events/view/world-s-largest-concert.

The school ensembles featured in the concert, all of which are directed by MENC members, will be announced in February 2009.

The NATIONAL ANTHEM PROJECT - “THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER”

HOW DID YOU PARTICIPATE?: National Anthem Day 2007 – September 14, 2007 to showcase the important role music education plays in teaching American historical and musical traditions. Help make the National Anthem Day a new annual tradition – contact fellow teachers, parents, schools, veteran’s groups, Scouts, and community leaders to join in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”.  Let MENC know your event plans so MENC can post your information on the National Anthem Day Web site!

Thousands of citizens, teachers, students, and organizations from across the US came to Washington, D.C. in support of music education and The National Anthem Project for the Grand Finale Celebrations June 14-17, 2007.  On June 14 (Flag Day) people gathered at the Washington monument for a mass patriotic sing-a-long of the national anthem accompanied by “The President’s Own” United States Marine Corps Band.  June 15 school ensembles from across the national performed at the national monuments throughout the area. June 16th schools performed the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the Navy Marine Corps Stadium followed by an exciting performance by the top drum corps of Drum Corps International.

The National Anthem Project started in Washington, D.C. in 2005, followed by the national Road Show in 2006, featured in the 2007 Rose Parade, and ending with the Grand Finale in 2007 after touching millions of lives by teaching and re-teaching people to sing our National Anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner”. (Paraphrased from the MENC web-site)

Thanks to Belvidere High School who represented IL at the National Anthem Project Final Celebration! Following is the breakdown of the number of schools from each state that participated in the celebration: AL 2; AR 2; AZ 4; CA 7; CO 2; CT 1; DE 1; FL 3; GA 1; ID 2; IL 1; IN 5; KS 2; KY 1; LA 3; MA 2; MD 1; ME 1; MI 2; MN1; MO 2; MS 1; MT 2; NC 7; NE 3; NH 1; NJ 2; NV 1; NY 1; OH 4; OK 2; OR 2; PA 4; SC 4; SD 1; TN 1; TX 5; UT 1; VA 3; VT 1;WI 4;WY 1.

Our family was in Washington, D.C. during the festivities (we were sorry we weren’t able to see Belvidere) and enjoyed meeting musicians from across the US. It was fun to hear music and see the mass sea of red “Star-Spangled Banner” shirts we all wore.

MY First Choice: I bought an Ipod (80 gig video). I have downloaded my CDs to my Ipod and now carry my Ipod between schools to play for my students instead of carrying stacks of CDs and records. It is so much faster to select the music/composer I am teaching from my Ipod instead of finding the CD, then the track, loading, etc.

Music In Our Schools Month 2008 “Music Touches Lives”

The World's Largest Concert (WLC) returned for Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) 2008. In response to member concerns, an MIOSM/WLC Task Force appointed by MENC's National Executive Board gathered information about WLC participation from music educators during the 2006-2007 school year. Based on those findings, there was a new WLC in 2008, meeting the educational and advocacy needs of members within current budget realities -- and making use of current technologies. More information, including the program music, was found on the MENC web site at www.menc.org/wlc with permission to use music through Sibelius and Hal Leonard (for DVD) and in Teaching Music.
MENC  produced a WLC concert and encouraged people to sing along at 1:00 p.m. EST March 13, 2008.

March 2007 Music In Our Schools Month

The Theme for 2007 Music In Our Schools Month (March) was "Music Touches Lives" . The World's Largest Concert for Music In Our Schools Month was discontinued. Check the MENC web site for details on Music In Our Schools Month and see the schools selected to be featured on the MENC web site. www.menc.org

How did you use Music to Touch the Lives of your students, school, and community this year?  Did you submit a video for the MENC web showcase? Did you view and vote on your favorite video?  What did you think of MENC using “YouTube” to show the videos for the showcase? Did you see any of the other videos that weren’t from MENC on that sight?  Were you able to use the new technology in your school to view and hear the videos? How was the quality?  Did you miss the free music use for the World’s Largest Concert for Music In Our Schools Month? Do you have any ideas for future MIOSM programs? I’d like to know how many of your schools use “United Streaming”. I know you are all very busy now, but MENC is at a turning point for MIOSM and they need your input. Please email me  your answers and ideas to forward to MENC (randolphd91@yahoo.com with “Music” in your email subject).

The National Association of Music Education teamed up with Feed the Children for the 2006 World's Largest Concert to teach our youth about the importance of giving, while reinforcing the importance of a high-quality music education for all.

The concert, filmed at the Grand Palace in Branson Missouri, featured the Oak Ridge Boys as hosts and an area youth symphony and chorus. The program included a performance of the winning song from the patriotic category of the Billboard World Song Contest. The World's Largest Concert aired Thursday, March 9, 2006 at 12pm CST. Be sure to read the article in the April 2006 issue of “Teaching Music” with special stories of schools that participated in the WLC and Feed the Children.
Feed The Children (FTC®) is an international non-profit relief organization that delivers food, medicine, clothing, and other necessities to children and families who lack these essentials due to famine, war, poverty, or natural disaster. Last year, FTC shipped 61 million pounds of food and 22 million pounds of other essentials to children and families in all 50 states and in 62 foreign countries. Feed The Children supplemented 509,133 meals a day, worldwide. Please visit their site to learn more about their efforts.

As children feature prominently in the missions of both organizations, MENC felt there was a natural relationship to focus efforts on helping children in need. Feed The Children has been in existence for 25 years and is rated a "four-star" charity by Charity Navigator, America’s premier charity evaluator.

PAST MIOSM IDEAS for 2006

Here are some ways my school participated. We planned several special opportunities throughout the year for our students. Please check other areas of our music web site for more information:

We had a year long Music celebration with a theme of  “Soar High With Music”. All K-5 students had a Hot Air Balloon Sticker page they earned music stickers for music worksheets completed, music performed, lessons passed, music computer work, concerts attended, etc.  At the end of the year a special drawing was held for 2 students to tether in a hot air balloon after our Music Technology Concert.

We started our MIOSM celebration  by inviting award-winning, internationally known composer, conductor, and clinician, Dr. Rollo A. Dilworth to work with the Kelvin Grove Chorus. His performing endeavors have taken him to the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. The Kelvin Grove chorus performed one of Dr. Dilworth’s compositions “Shine on Me” at the IGSMA contest, on the Easter Seals Telethon, and at the Music Technology Concert

Milne Grove (K-3) students  celebrated MIOSM by continuing to work on the internationally award-winning Music Ace music software program. Parents came in, observed, and participated with their child on Music Ace.

May 2  was a very special “Soar High With Music” technology concert and Open House for our completed 27 station computer/MIDI piano/ Music Technology Lab. The concert  featured original student compositions, all 4-5 grade students, KG Chorus, select students in grades 6-8, a 6-8 grade men’s chorus, guest professional musicians, student guitarists, student pianists, student organists, and audience participation. The Concert Finale was a performance of 10 pianos, 4 organs, 10 guitars, 200 voice choir, and a MULTI-MEDIA/light show presentation of Phantom of the Opera followed by Star Wars. Darth Vader with light Saber invited the audience to follow him to “a galaxy far, far away and SOAR HIGH WITH MUSIC”. Outside 2 students were selected (from an all school drawing) and tethered in a Hot Air Balloon.  At this concert we honored corporations and individuals who contributed to helping build the music technology lab.
