A child's success in school depends on a partnership between the student, the teacher, and the parents. Please set aside time each day to review with your child the work he or she brings home in their "home folder".

Reading
In order to reinforce their reading
skills, each first grader is expected to read a little each night. Have
your child read to you, while you encourage them to read each sentence
smoothly. Model for them the proper use of expression. Even as first
graders begin to read more independently, they continue to enjoy hearing stories
read aloud to them.
Spelling
Each week's spelling word list will be sent home on Friday, and the test for that list of words will be given on the last day of the next school week. Please practice these words with your child each night. Your child can practice by writing each word with markers, chalk, or colored pencils. They can also build the word using magnetic letters, letter tiles, letter cards, or even playdoh. Please remember to use all small letters unless the word is a proper noun.
Math
Your child will have math homework Monday through Thursday. Please go over
this work with your child, and correct any incorrect answers with him and
her. This homework is always due the next school day.

January
Newsletter
Miss Sander's Class
During the month of January, our class will be completing a unit on penguins. The students will learn about where penguins live, how they move, what they eat, and who their enemies are. At the conclusion of this unit, each student will write a factual story about penguins.
Also this month we will look at the world map, and discover that there are seven continents. The students will also learn that oceans cover three fourths of the Earth. This is a part of our social studies curriculum.
In reading, we will be working on identifying the elements of a story such as characters, setting, and theme. This month, the children should be beginning to read stories smoothly instead of word by word. When you receive the homework sheets stamped "Read Aloud With Parent", encourage your child to reread until they are able to read each sentence smoothly.
This month in phonics, the children will be introduced to the following sounds: "ch" as in chin, "ar" as in far, "qu" as in quit, and "wh" as in when. They will also be introduced to long vowel sounds with the silent "e" pattern. Example: bake, tape, bike, and rope.
In math, continue to practice the addition and subtraction fact cards. Remind your child to check the sign, "+" or "-" before they solve a problem. The first week in February, we will learn the addition problems which are called "doubles plus one". For example, if you know the double, 5+5=10, then you know that the answer to 5+6 must be one more. Please review the doubles with your child up to 9+9=18 so that these facts become automatic. Other concepts that we will be learning in math are: adding two-digit numbers, using a ruler to draw a line segment, dividing a square in half, and identifying pairs.
Facts to Practice
10+2=12 10-2=8
9+2=11 9-2=7
8+2=10 8-2=6
7+2=9 7-2=5

5+2=7 5-2=3
