4th Quarter
Daily Activites
for
Language Arts/Reading :
Reading Book Baggie
Students have begun bringing home their reading books each night for homework. Please take the time to listen to your child read this book several times. Have them find words in the book, ask them what the book it about, and praise them for their wonderful reading. Please be sure to sign the reading log each night and return it to school the next day. This is a great way to practice skills and gain confidence in sight words, blending sounds, tracking words, using illustrations to tell a story, and a LOVE of reading on their own!
Kindergarten Countdown
Attached to your April/May calendar you recieved an ABC countdown for Kindergarten. Please check it each day because some days students are expected to dress a special way or bring something special to school. If you have misplaced your countdown just let me know and I will send you another one.
Book Baggies (Different than the Reading Book Bag)
Continue to keep the Book Baggie in their backpack or in a special place at home. All the books we make in school should be kept it this special bag. The students already have a wonderful collection of many books that they can read. Be sure to praise their emergent reading skills by encouraging them to read their books to family, friends, and even pets! When a new book comes home the students are told to read it three times before it goes in their book baggie.
Writing
During Fourth Quarter we will be focusing on writing first and last names correctly using lined paper. We will also focus on writing all the letters of the alphabet in the correct way.....using lined paper and starting most of the letters from the top..
Each morning the students begin their day writing on a dry erase board. We play these writing games that you could also play at home:
Play Mad Minutes : They write as many words as they can in 5 minutes.
I Spy: I say "I spy a word that is a sight word that begins with "w". They need to find it and write it on their board.
I produce a letter sound and they have to write the letter that makes that sound on their board.
I give them a sentence starter and they complete the sentence using their "kindergarten writing". ie. I like to go to _____________________.
Flash: I hold up a sight word for three seconds and when I put the word down, they have to try and write the sight word from memory.
We will practice writing three letter words by using three Elkonin Boxes. Students are told a word and they write the first letter of the word in the first box, middle sounds goes in the middle box, and the ending sound of the word in the third box. This helps students with directionality, and reinforces letter/sound association. You can play this word game at home.
More about "Kindergarten Writing".....
Kindergarten writing is when children write words using the sounds/letters they hear in the word. For example, the word "apple" would be written "apl" because those are the sounds they hear. This kind of writing helps to strengthen the students' ability to hear sounds in words, identify the letter sounds, and break apart sounds in a word. Please encourage this kind of writing at home rather than always spelling words for them. Tell them to write what they hear.
Blending Sounds
To practice blending three letter words together we chop and blend them on our arm. We say the first sound while tapping our shoulder, the middle sound is said while tapping at the elbow, and the final sound is said as we tap our wrist. When we are trying to put the three sounds together we SLIDE our hand down and blend all three sounds together.
Other Activities to do at home:
*To check letter/sound association at home ask your child ask your child what sound each letter makes and have them tell you a word that begins with that sound.
* Rhyming is an important skill in learning to read. Play the rhyming game by giving your child a word and seeing if they can come up with words that rhyme with it.
*Clapping syllables in words is also a great emergent reading skill! It helps the children break up the word to better hear the sounds within it.
*It's sooooooooo important to remember to read everyday with your child.
Sight Words/Color Words to Practice:
Color Words: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, black, brown, purple, pink, white
Sight words: a, my, the, I, like, we, go, on, to, you, have, do, see, are, one, for, me, here, little, come,
A great way to practice sight words....
Write the sight words on post-it notes and stick them where your child can see them (in their room, on the back of the door, etc.) That will remind them to practice every time they see their words!
