Frequent Parent questions
What happens during my child's speech therapy session?
If your child has an IEP for speech therapy and is working on speech sound production a typical 30 minute session begins with a review of any previous homework. The next 5 minutes are spent on auditory awareness of their speech sound where they may listen to word lists, listen to selections from their weekly curriculum story and identify words which contain their sound or identify their speech sound in various word positions. If your child is in the early stages of therapy some work may be done at the speech mirror to improve tongue movement, strength and accuracy. The last 20 minutes are spent on sound production which may be saying single words, words in sentences such as tongue twisters or reading curriculum texts. During the last few minutes homework is assigned and tips provided to help at home.
* Reminder - All speech students are encouraged to complete homework assignments weekly. Parents please initial all assignments.
