Week of January 5
First Grade
This week we will be reading the story: Soon I Will. The sight words we will be working on are: animals, fly, wings, air, around, turns, live, insect, soon, hatch. For phonics we will be working on words with 'ch' and 'tch'. We will also continue to review all of the short vowel sounds. Everyday we practice "stretching words like a rubber band" (sounding out unknown words). For comprehension we are going to work on predicting outcomes.
Second Grade
This week we are going to read the story: From Seed to Plant. The vocabulary words for the week are: different, water, air, light, food, beautiful, nutrition, ripens, streams, protects. For phonics this week we will be reviewing words with 'or', 'ore' and 'our'. We will also work on words that begin with 'spr', 'str', and 'thr'. For comprehension this week we are going to work on reading diagrams and we are going to work on identifying details in the story.
WOW Words
This year students will be introduced to "WOW" words or Words Of the Week. These words are words that we will work on during the week and we will try to incorporate them throughout the stories during the year. Students are not tested on these words. This is another way that I am trying to increase the students' vocabulary.
First Grade WOW Word: variety
