It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations- something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.
 ~ Katherine Paterson

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” -Victor Hugo"

We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading." - B. F. Skinner

"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library." - Jorge Luis Borges

How to Get a Library Card From the Public Library . . .

Residents of Lockport Township live in the Des Plaines Valley Public Library District. The library has locations in Lockport and Crest Hill. You may apply for a library card without charge. Parents should apply for their children's cards in person at the library. Bring two forms of identification with you that have your current name and address on them. In addition to your driver's license or state ID, recent utility bills, personal checks, rental agreements, and mortgage papers are accepted. If your photo ID does not have your current address, that's OK - just supply two forms of ID that do, in addition to your photo ID. You can fill out the application for library card at the library. Or, you can go to Des Plaines Valley Public Library website, download the application form, print it and complete it in advance. Library location:

Summer Reading Programs have drawn to a close - but KG students can still reap the benefits.  Students who completed the DesPlaines Valley Public Library (Lockport Library) Summer Reading Program simply need to show Mrs. B a copy of their completion certificate to receive 50 KG KASH!  Way to go summer readers!!!

August Update from Mrs. B:

The Illinois State Board of Education wants EVERY READER to find the RIGHT BOOK!  Here are 7 ways to reach that goal:

Lexile LogoISBE SAYS, "Studies show that children who continue to read during the summer months are better prepared to succeed when school doors open in the fall. This summer, help students retain their academic progress and develop a lifelong love of reading with Lexile measures and the free “Find-a-Book” search tool.

7 Easy Steps to Summertime Reading:

  1. Identify the child’s Lexile measure. A Lexile measure indicates the reading level of a child or a book, and is represented as a number followed by an “L” (for example 750L). A child's Lexile measure can be found on ISAT Score reports for students in grades 3 through 8, and on many standardized test score reports.

Higher Lexile measures allow advanced and enthusiastic readers to:

    • be challenged with high-interest books above their Lexile level
    • seek help with a hard but interesting book
    • find other books on the same subject but at a higher Lexile level

Lower Lexile measures allow struggling and reluctant readers to:

    • build skills with less challenging books on topics of choice
    • select high-low books based on Lexile and developmental levels
    • find other books on the same subject but at a lower Lexile level
  2. Go to www. lexile com/findabook.
  3. Enter the child’s Lexile measure. If you don’t know the child’s Lexile measure, do a search based on a child’s grade level and comfort with the typical reading materials at that grade level to determine his or her starting Lexile range.
  4. Select the child’s interests from a list of categories.
  5. View/refine the search results.
  6. Print the child’s custom reading list.
  7. Follow the prompts to buy the book online or reserve it at the local public library.

One of the main goals of the LRC is to generate a positive connection between books, reading, the library and the reader.

Through the DesPlaines Valley Library partnership, D91 students and staff can get NetLibrary Access.  Check out NetLibrary and eContent.
