More than a Tea Party

It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations- something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.
 ~ Katherine Paterson

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” -Victor Hugo"

We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading." - B. F. Skinner

"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library." - Jorge Luis Borges

"A library should be like a pair of open arms."  -Roger Rosenblat

Genres . . . Autobiography poems are flooding the LRC walls. During Library Lovers' Month students are creating Auto-Bio Poems, in addition to continuing to increase skills with searching, research and databases.

The 2011 Caudill nominees were just released and The Lightning Thief is THE MOST REQUESTED book, since the movie is due out Friday, Feb 12.

During this quarter students will review literary genres, Internet safety, and will learn tips to improve research skills. Depending on the grade level, MLA citation, search engine use techniques and plagiarism will be the informational topics covered, too. Students are always encouraged to choose their own recreational reading books, in addition to any classroom-assigned reading materials.

One of the main goals of the LRC is to generate a positive connection between books, reading, the library and the reader.

Through the DesPlaines Valley Library partnership, D91 students and staff can get NetLibrary Access.  Check out NetLibrary and eContent.

Check out the free trial from the State of Illinois (MORE DATABASES): http://www.finditillinois.org/tryit/. The login is free2try and the password is ILLINET.
